What are Hammertoes?
Hammertoe is a common podiatric issue which is characterized by a bending of one or both joints of any toes except the big toe. This condition can cause problems with wearing shoes, which tends to worsen the problem. Those who suffer from this condition may notice some of the following symptoms:
Corns either between the toes or on top, side or end of the toes. Corns are a buildup of skin caused by the friction at the contact point between the toe and shoe.
Calluses may form on the bottom of the toes or on the ball of the foot. Calluses are rough, dry patches of dead skin that has built up.
Pain or irriation when the toes come into contact with the shoe.
Treatment options include changing footwear, padding the corns and calluses, trimming the corns and calluses, custom orthotic footwear and devices, anti-inflammatory medications and splinting the affected toe. In some extreme cases, surgery may be recommended.
Contact Kalker Podiatry today at 215-968-4048 so we can discuss your hammertoe problem and find the right treatment option for you.

Hammertoe Splints
Hammertoe splints are constructed of comfortable, but sturdy material which gently extend the hammertoe, allowing it to lie straight and therefore the pain is alleviated in the top and tip of the toe. The splint will help prevent the toe from becoming worse, allows it to bear weight normally, and prevents bulges in footwear that hammertoes can cause. The well padded bottom part of the splint will cushion the ball of the foot, giving the wearer extra comfort. Hammertoe splints will easily fit in any style footwear. Make an appointment today with Dr. Lawrence Kalker at 215-968-4048 to discuss your hammertoe issues.

What are Plantar Warts?
Plantar Warts are noncancerous growths that appear on the sole, heel, or ball of the foot. Many plantar warts are diagnosed on their appearance. They tend to be rough and spongy and many are gray, brown or yellow with dark pinpoints.
Plantar Warts can occur when the human papilloma virus (HPV) enters the body through the skin on bottom of feet, usually through cuts and breaks. This virus is often present on surfaces such as tile floors or public locker rooms, showers or swimming pools.
Some people are more prone to the virus that causes plantar warts than others. Risk factors include repeated HPV exposure. For example, walking barefoot in common public areas. Having a weakened immune system may make you more susceptible to plantar warts.
Individuals often feel a "lump" on the bottom of the foot when standing. If left untreated, plantar warts can grow and may spread into clusters called mosaic warts. In severe cases, this can cause a change in gait or posture that results in leg or back pain.
If you are suffering from plantar warts, please contact Kalker Podiatry at 215-968-4048 so we can prescribe an appropriate treatment plan for you.

The Difference Between Sprains and Strains
Sometimes when you experience pain when working out, you may wonder what kind of injury you may have. Most often, you'll have a sprain or strain of your muscle. How do you know the difference and how would you treat them?
A sprain is a stretch and/or tear of a ligament. A ligament is the fibrous band of connective tissue that joins the ends of two bones together. Ligaments help to stabilize and support the body's joints.
A sprain is caused by direct or indirect trauma that dislocates a joint out of position or overstretches it. In more severe cases the supporting ligaments can rupture. Usually this kind of injury happens when a person falls and lands on an outstretched arm, the side of the foot or runs on an uneven surface. Symptoms of a sprain include pain, bruising, swelling, and inflammation.
A strain is an injury to a muscle or tendon. Tendons are fibrous cords of tissue that attach muscles to bone. Chronic strains are the result of prolonged, repetitive movements of muscles and tendons. Insufficient breaks during intensive training can sometimes lead to a strain. Symptoms of a strain include pain muscle spasm, muscle weakness, swelling inflammation and cramping.
If you are concerned you may have a sprain or strain, please call Kalker Podiatry at 215-968-4048 for an appointment to discuss your symptoms.

Haglund's Deformity
Haglund's Deformity, sometimes known as the "pump bump" because it is prevalent among women who wear pump-style shoes. It may occur in one or both feet. This ailment can be caused by a combination of genetic and external factors and can lead to discomfort and sometimes pain in the back of the heel.
If you are suffering from this condition, you may have noticed a bony enlargement at the back of your heel. This inflammation is caused when soft tissue around the Achilles tendon becomes irritated. Irritation at this spot is often a result of pressure caused by the back of pump-style shoes. Other signs of Haglund's Deformity include swelling in the back of the heel and redness or inflamed tissue at the swelling site.
Though surgery is an option to correct this condition, there are also many nonsurgical treatments available.
Please call Kalker Podiatry at 215-948-4048 for an appointment to discuss your treatment options for Haglund's Deformity.

Onychomycosis
Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of either the toenails or fingernails. This ailment causes the nails to thicken, discolor, disfigure and split. When first looking at onychomycosis, you may think it is just a cosmetic issue. But without treatment, the toenails can become abnormally thick forcing the toe to press against the shoes, which can cause pressure, irritation and pain. If this disease progresses without treatment, onychomycosis may interfere with standing, walking and exercising.
Risks factors for developing onychomycosis include family history, advancing age, poor health, trauma, showering in communal showers and wearing shoes that don't allow proper airflow on a regular basis.
Treatment options vary, depending on the individual and the severity of the ailment. Please call Kalker Podiatry at 215-968-4048 to discuss your condition.

Flatfoot (Fallen Arches)
It is very unusual to find a person who walks with both feet in perfect alignment. Often we walk on the inside or outside of our feet, or with our toes or heels rotated inward. These kind of walking patterns can cause not only problems with your feet but also your entire body. The alignment of your feet sets the foundation for the entire body's alignment. One of the most common effects of improper alignment is called flatfoot or fallen arches.
This condition is characterized by a lack of an arch in the inner foot. This can be a genetic condition or the results of improper body mechanics. A healthy foot will be structurally able to support the weight of the body but a flat foot is often unable to give the body the same support. Flatfoot can cause extreme pressure in the ankles, knees and hips.
If you are suffering from flatfoot, please call Kalker Podiatry at 215-968-4048 to discuss your condition and possible treatment plans.

Selecting Proper Running Shoes
One of the first things a runner should do is select proper, supportive running shoes. Not wearing proper footwear while running can possibly lead to a variety of foot problems and cause injury.
Feet are typically categorized into three types: low/flat arch, normal arch and high arch. For those with low arches, you should choose a supportive shoe that will give you stability and motion control. For feet with normal arches, you should look for shoes with equal amounts of stability and cushioning to help absorb shock. For runners with a high arch, choose a cushioned running shoe with a soft midsole so there is more flexibility. This will help with the poor absorption high arched runners may have.
If you need assistance on selecting proper running shoes, please call Kalker Podiatry at 215-968-4048 for an appointment to discuss your needs. Disclaimer: This is not meant as advice for your particular foot problem which must be diagnosed by a medical professional.

Athlete's Foot
Athlete’s foot is a fungal infection of the skin that causes scaling, flaking and itching of the affected areas. It often begins between the fourth and fifth toe. If left untreated, the skin may become highly sensitive to the touch. If Athlete's foot progresses without treatment, the condition can result in white, peeling skin and a milky discharge. Athlete's foot, which can be highly contagious, is typically contracted in damp places such as public pools, locker rooms and showers.
It is important to treat Athlete’s foot at the first sign of infection as the body can become vulnerable to other bacterial infections. The infection can also be transmitted to other parts of the body through bedding and clothes. Patients with serious cases of athlete’s foot may develop a rash that covers the sole of the foot. Known as “moccasin foot,” this manifestation of Athlete’s foot creates extremely scaly, thick and rough skin on the bottom of the foot.
If you are experiencing the symptoms of Athlete’s foot, contact Kalker Podiatry today at 215-968-4048 for effective treatment options.
Disclaimer: This is not meant as advice for your particular foot problem which must be diagnosed by a medical professional.

Disclaimer: This is not meant as advice for your particular foot problem which must be diagnosed by a medical professional.

Diabetic Foot Ulcer
A diabetic foot ulcer is an open sore or wound typically found on the bottom of the foot. This condition occurs in approximately 15% of patients with diabetes.
Ulcers develop due to a combinations of factors such as a lack of feeling in the foot, poor circulation, foot deformities, irritation, trauma and duration of diabetes.
Symptoms may include drainage in the socks, redness, swelling and odor. Pain is not a common symptom since many diabetics who develop foot ulcers have lost the ability to feel pain due to nerve damage caused by elevated blood glucose levels over a period of time.
Once you have developed an ulcer, you should seek medical attention immediately to help prevent infection. Please call Kalker Podiatry at 215-968-4048 for appointment so your foot condition can be evaluated and treated.

Early treatment will lessen the risk of exposure to others and alleviate the painful symptoms associated with this condition. Ingrown Toenails
Though they can begin as a small nuisance, ingrown toenails can become a significant issue if left untreated. Caused by a segment of the toenail that embeds in the skin around the nail, an ingrown toenail is characterized by pain, swelling, redness and a feeling of warmth in the affected toe. If the nail digs into the flesh around the nail and causes the skin to break, bacteria may enter, which can cause an infection. Some people are prone to ingrown toenails while others may be caused by improper nail trimming.

Disclaimer: This is not meant as advice for your particular foot problem which must be diagnosed by a medical professional.

Disclaimer: This is not meant as advice for your particular foot problem which must be diagnosed by a medical professional.

Disclaimer: This is not meant as advice for your particular foot problem which must be diagnosed by a medical professional

Morton's Neuroma
A neuroma is a thickening of the nerve tissue that may develop in various parts of the body creating nerve damage. Morton's Neuroma is the most common neuroma in the foot. It occurs at the base of the third and fourth toes.
Symptoms for this ailment include tingling, burning, numbness, pain, and a feeling that something is inside the ball of the foot.
The symptoms tend to begin gradually and occur occasionally at first. This can happen when you wear narrow-toed shoes or perform certain activities. Overtime, the symptoms tend to get worse and may persist for several days or weeks at a time. The symptoms may become more intense as the neuroma grows in size and the nerve damage becomes more permanent.
If you are concerned that you may suffer from Morton's Neuroma, please call Dr. Lawrence Kalker at 215-968-4048 for an appointment to discuss possible treatment options. Disclaimer: This is not meant as advice for your particular foot problem which must be diagnosed by a medical professional.

Posterior Tibial Dysfunction
Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD) is the inflammation or overstretching of the posterior tibial tendon in the foot. The function of the posterior tibial tendon is to support the arch of the foot. This tendon serves as a supporting structure to assist the foot while walking but if PTTD is present the result is sometimes "adult-acquired flatfoot."
Symptoms for PTTD include pain, swelling, flattening of the arch and an inward roll of the ankle. When PTTD first develops, it starts with pain on the inside of the foot and ankle.
If you are suffering from PTTD, please call Kalker Podiatry at 215-968-4048 to discuss your treatment options. Disclaimer: This is not meant as advice for your particular foot problem which must be diagnosed by a medical professional.

If you are suffering from an ingrown toenail, please contact Kalker Podiatry at 215-968-4048 so you can receive treatment. Disclaimer: This is not meant as advice for your particular foot problem which must be diagnosed by a medical professional.

Disclaimer: This is not meant as advice for your particular foot problem which must be diagnosed by a medical professional.

Disclaimer: This is not meant as advice for your particular foot problem which must be diagnosed by a medical professional.
